The undulating Tuscan hills seduce many travellers not already caught up in the sheer beauty of Florence. Here Sangiovese finds its most famous home, surrounding the medieval village of Montalcino. Since the 1970's the number of proud winemakers has exploded along with the international recognition of this remote village enthralled by the depth of expression of its native grape: Brunello.
Jetset Mario Bollag had lived around the world all the while hoping to make his home in Tuscany. In 1997 that dream became a reality when he purchased two 6 hectare parcels in the spectacular Montalcino hills. Each parcel, hailing from two distinct terriors (one in the Pian Bossolino in the southwest of Montalcino where the gentle southern exposure and composite soils produce wines of great aromatic complexity, and the other southeast of Montalcino near Saint Antimo where lower elevations and a warmer, drier climate give deep rich ripeness and structure) helped to propel Mario and his newfound winery Terralsole among the stars of Montalcino.
This Friday, it is our enormous pleasure to introduce Mario and the wines of Terralsole at the Boiler Room.
Because of the differences in soil composition, Mario decided to select rootstocks that were approriate for each parcel. Terralsole produces a Brunello, of course, and the Brunello Riserva is solidly placed among the Wine Spectators 100 best. Along with the Brunello, Mario also bottles a Rosso di Montalcino.
On Friday Mario will present his Rosso di Montalcino as well as his Solista, a Syrah from the warmer Fonte Lattaia vineyard. This, along with Terralsole's Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, and Brunello Riserva present an exciting and dramatic line-up.
Time is short, and those of you that have been following us on Twitter or Facebook already know about this event, but Mario's visit is sure to be an impressive example of the evolution of Montalcino.
As always the menu is being formulated. But Nebraska rabbit, housemade bigoli, Piedmontese beef, and Iowa duck are sure to play a role.
The cost is $95/person before tax and tip and reservations can be made here or by calling 402-916-9274.
