Marketplace West starts a movement

For those who have not had the pleasure to meet, I am Denise Hopps the new addition to the Marketplace West Management team.

I am a big believer in the philosophy that wellness equals happier staff, and happier staff equals a better work environment. 

My goal is to help cultivate an environment of healthy choices here at Marketplace West and thanks to the FUN project we are off to a great start this year with wellness. 

We had 18 faculty and staff sign up at Dixon or the Faculty Staff Fitness program through the FUN project. We were also able to get a Fusion Fitness class here at Marketplace West three days a week, through a partnership with the faculty fitness program. 

This class was developed to meet the untraditional schedule of dining staff workers. 

One of our staff members, Jill Petreny, asked the question, “Can we get a class at 3 p.m.?”  She got a group together that wanted the class, coordinated the time and location with the faculty fitness group, and now we are on the road to a healthier year.

The class is open to everyone, and you can sign up on the Faculty and Fitness website.  Come join us in our wellness movement!

Get a bite of knowledge at 'Lunch and Learn' 

Stop by one of the upcoming sessions hosted by Be Well at Oregon State:
  • “Making It All Fit” with Malinda Shell, 12:10 to 12:55 p.m., Feb. 3, MU 109B. It takes time to be healthy. This session will provide you with some tips and strategies to help manage your time and maintain balance.
  • “It’s PARTY Time!” with Tara Sanders and Lynn Cordes, 12:05 to 12:55 p.m., Feb. 8, Marketplace West. You’re starting to get the hang of this healthier living thing and guess what? You are invited to a friend’s barbeque! You imagine all of the wonderful foods that will be there and start to get anxious about how to stay on track with healthy eating. This session is for you. Learn how to make healthier alternatives to party favorites so you can still enjoy without abandoning your healthy ways.
  • “What Are My Next Steps: Commit 2 Fit-The Best Is Yet To Come” with Rochelle Scwhab, 12:10 to 12:55, March 2, MU 109B. Many times when a person is done with their goal of working out for 10 weeks, they do not know where to go from that point forward.  We will be discussing Life Habits to implement for the next 8 weeks that will carry you through your life to a healthier you.

Hitch a ride to the slopes

The Department of Recreational Sports is sponsoring several excursions to Mount Bachelor ski resort this term.

Get on the bus to Mt. Bachelor on Jan. 28 or Feb. 11.

For $75, OSU community members can ride the shuttle and buy a lift ticket. Cost is $65 for Adventure Club members and $85 for the general public. Equipment rentals and beginner lessons can also be arranged for an additional cost.

Stride through Winter Term

Beaver Strides walking program is FREE for all OSU students, faculty and staff (thanks to support from Pacific Source funding for BeWell@OSU.

Winter term Beaver Strides online registration is happening now. Stop by the Beaver Strides Kickoff Party Open House anytime between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. this Friday, Jan. 27, at Plageman Building, SHS 322.

Register ahead of time and pick up a free pedometer, tracking booklet and be entered to win prizes.

Weight Watchers kicks off new session

Interested in joining a Weight Watchers? The next 13-week session began Jan. 17.

If you are a PEBB subscriber the cost of the meetings is subsidized.  If interested contact  WW/Pebb number 866-454-2144 and ask for a confirmation code and present that confirmation code at your first meeting.
