Carlow Chamber Newsletter for local business news and events.

Note from the President

This week we had 2 very worthwhile events and the overall message from both was how businesses can do things differently to win business and to win customers. Firstly Carlow Chamber in conjunction with Carlow County Council ran a free seminar on eTendering and Procurement in the Seven Oaks Hotel on 4th May last.  The seminar was primarily for business in the county who may wish to be included on the Carlow Local Authorities Tender Lists. The excellent panel of speakers included representatives from the National Procurement Service and the local authorities. We feel that it is a must for local companies to be registered on the eTenders website and not to miss out
on doing more business in this way.

Secondly, we had the return of Retail Guru Alistair Lorimer. Alistair is a wonderful Retail consultant from the UK and each time he visits us at the Arboretum he brings fresh, new and innovotive ideas that really work when there put into practice in our store. For this event for Carlow Chamber Alistair covered TEN GREAT IDEAS ON HOW TO MARKET YOUR BUSINESS DIFFERENTLY and HOW TO IMPROVE CUSTOMER SERVICE TO INCREASE SALES. Alistair Lorimer gave very practical approach with lots of examples, and the room was buzzing with positivity and ideas.

I cannot emphasise enough the importance of coming to events like these, especially in the times were in and I encourage all members to get the best value for their membership by attending our events regularly.

New Company Pledges Support to Local Small Businesses in [Carlow/Kilkenny]

Business owner hopes to create employment in Carlow following €100,000 investment

Carlow resident and businesswoman, Emma Rees, has undertaken to devote her energies to supporting the needs and development of small businesses in the Carlow-Kilkenny area, to the benefit of the local economy.  Emma made the pledge at the opening of her new company, TaxAssist Accountants, which was officially launched on the 7th of April by Carlow  Mayor Walter Lacey. The new TaxAssist Accountants shop is located on Kennedy Avenue, Hannover Square and the new venture is the result of a €100,000 investment in the town which, it is hoped, will lead to employment creation.

Originally from Wales, Emma is a chartered management accountant who has been living in Carlow for over three years.  With the establishment of her new business, she has now firmly set down her roots.“I am delighted to be opening my own business in Carlow and my firm aim is to lend my support and expertise specifically to small businesses in the Carlow-Kilkenny area,” said Emma.  “There is a real can-do attitude to business here in Carlow and I want to support and enable this as much as I can and, in a practical way, to help drive the local economy and business community.

“It can be really difficult for people to get access to the financial advice they need in plain English, especially those hoping to start their own business and this can be a real barrier for some when it needn’t be. We have developed a number of guides and resources that cover common accounting and tax questions particularly for start-ups. Anyone can call in off the street to take a copy and to discuss their particular circumstances free of charge.”

Following her investment in Carlow, Emma Rees has big plans. “TaxAssist Accountants is a relatively new concept and brand in Ireland but is already growing rapidly. A TaxAssist Accountants opened in Kildare just under a year ago and has already created four full time jobs.  My intention is to create employment at the same rate here in Carlow and hopefully I will be able to do this sooner rather than later.”

Rees works with a broad range of customers, from hairdressers to dentists to printers, and she says they all have one thing in common, a desire for value.  “Clients want a good, proactive service from their accountant without the expensive hourly rates that usually brings.  We work on a fixed fee basis so there are no hidden fees and no shocks!”
