INTERCEPT Plasma Receives Swiss Approval
The Swiss regulatory body, Swissmedic, has approved the use of plasma components treated with INTERCEPT. This provides the Swiss blood centers with the option to treat both platelets and plasma with INTERCEPT, taking advantage of the natural synergy between the two processes. To date, INTERCEPT is the only technology approved in Switzerland for pathogen inactivation treatment of platelets and plasma.

Domestic Malaria Case Reported in Spain
An autochthonous case of Plasmodium vivax malaria was diagnosed in the Aragon region of Spain where the Anopheles atroparvusis vector is endemic.  This is the first case since 1961.  Emerging and re-emerging vector-borne diseases continue to impact Europe.  Vigilance among transfusion the medicine community is warranted.

CSL to Work with Cerus to Commercialize  INTERCEPT in Australia and New Zealand
CSL Limited, Biotherapies division and Cerus has agreed to distribute the INTERCEPT Platelet System in Australia and New Zealand. Cerus expects that should the blood services plan to adopt the system, they will need first to obtain regulatory approval for use of INTERCEPT-treated platelets.

UK Prohibits ME/CFS Blood Donations
E  howeNew safety guidelines from the UK’s Blood Services will permanently defer sufferers of myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) or chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) from donating blood. Though the intent is to prevent causing harm to the donor, some see this as an effective means of preventing the transfusion-transmission of XMRV, a virus controversially linked to several disease states including CFS.
