BPM Metrics That Matter!
BPM metrics measure the health of your BPM projects and are the most effective way to gain key stakeholder approval about where and how resources are spent.
If you don’t measure your processes and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) before you start your project, you will have nothing to compare the result with and it will be difficult to prove the project’s benefits. In fact, forgetting to measure KPIs is one of the most common mistakes of intial BPM initiatives.
The top advice we give to our clients as they start their BPM project is to have well defined metrics and indicators that will help measure the success of your BPM project. In addition, it is important to choose indicators that are specific, can easily be measured, and provide value to the process stakeholder. The metric should indicate that a clear, specific action is required, and should be powerful enough to prompt corrective action.
Baseline indicators should also be established before you take your BPM project live. It’s important to know how processes were completed before your BPM software was installed.
Once your BPM initiative is live, you should continuously monitor the results and determine if you are meeting the Key Performance Indicators set at the beginning of the project. Reports can be generated from BPMS systems so that process bottlenecks are identified and adjustments can be made to enhance your process efficiency.
In short, visibility into process performance and compliance are one of the key value propositions of implementing a BPMS system. The metrics and key performance indicators are essential to BPM success and it’s important to acquire a solid understanding of measurement techniques as you begin your BPM project.
