In This Edition:
The Cost Of Originals, Workshop Lesson, My Interior Shoot

Original, Limited Edition, Signed, Numbered
These designations may not have clear meanings to you but they are reasons that a piece of original art (like my limited edition prints?) will and should cost you more. Simply put an original piece of art is the actual work of the artist, whatever its form. It's not a reproduction by the artist which would cost less and it's not a reproduction by a mass retailer which should cost much less. A limited edition print is not the original but it is one of a defined number. The fact that there is a defined number that can exist means it's worth more. A limited edition print should be signed by the artist and numbered. If it isn't how is the owner reassured that the edition is limited? Open edition prints are the least expensive because there's pretty much as many of them out there as the market will handle.

For you the only consideration may be whether you like a picture and want it in your home or office or cave or cell (if they let you have that). If you just can't figure out why you should pay more for a print because we know how many of them can be sold then you probably should stick with open edition prints and just buy what makes you happy. Some folks like to know that they have a pleasing picture and that it's one of a defined and relatively small number. I, of course, count on those folks to buy my limited edition prints.

Workshop Lesson
As I conduct my photography workshop/tours of the French Quarter for American Photo Safari I find a few lessons that impress just about everyone. Some of my advice may apply to some of the students and not others but one that nearly always gets the "Oh, I see." response is to shoot your subjects doing something besides posing for the camera.

think is rather obvious. Your friends and relatives know your appearance. They'll know it's you they're seeing even if you're not facing them like you're in a lineup. The image of people doing something, even just looking at the landmark in the picture, adds more for the eye and brain to interpret and makes the photograph a little more interesting.

To put it another way, the top picture of the Greens is a shot of the Greens. The lower picture is a shot of the St. Louis Cathedral as seen from the Algiers ferry with the Greens on board.

My Interior Shoot
I'm sure you're just hoping around waiting to see the results of my first interior shoot which I did in December. Actually I know you're not hoping around but I'm going to show you some results anyway. I shot the home of my friends, Joe &

I think is very tasteful and elegant while reflecting the eclectic taste of the Dukes. For me the job was a great experience because working with my friend at a friend's house meant I could take my time getting a feel for the lighting. My setup, shooting with my Canon EOS 5D Mk2 tethered to my laptop, let me show the scene to Susan so she could make some adjustments of the elements before shooting and we could both make adjustments after seeing how each shot looked right after I took it. When it was over we

so that the colors and textures looked their best and looked like what we see with out eyes which have a wider dynamic range than the camera. Susan Currie is moving back to New Orleans from a short time in Atlanta (where she cheered for the Saints) and you can see more of her work on her web site.

The Best Light
When shooting a portrait turn off the flash and put your subject near a window away from the direct sunlight. The diffuse light will be soft and flattering. Let the light be strongest on one side of the face & it'll wrap around the other side.
The QR Code
If you have a scanner app on your smart phone (I use Optiscan) you can point the phone camera at the code, let it scan it, and it will open a web page I created from which you can select a free picture. That page isn't public. You can also click on the header to go to the remainder of my web site.
