anatomy of an awesome newsletter

Ah, it's a new year, filled with new possibility. You're full of energy and inspiration. It's time to execute all of those ideas that have been swirling in your head since 3Q11. It's time to get going on that newsletter!

But you're worried, aren't you? What if you do the work -- define the objective, choose an approach, design the masthead and styles, write the content, choose the provider, cull the list -- only to have it go up in flames? What if no one reads it? What if it totally sucks?

Well, I can't tell you how to make it easy, but I can tell you how to make it awesome.

1. Be yourself
2. Be helpful
3. Be concise

Sure, you could inundate it with slick marketing speak. Extol your virtues. Tell the world they can't live without you. Explain how your products and services will save the world. But only if that's you, and you like being THAT GUY at the party.

And you could only focus on yourself and not give a hoot about your audience. And not care about their wants and needs. And not offer up any insight and advice. But only if you like being THAT GUY at the party.

And you could drone on and on about it all, which would really make you THAT GUY at the party.

Seriously though, email is social media (the very first form, in fact), which means you need to get social. So be yourself, be helpful, and be concise. Be the person that everyone wants to hear from.

Be awesome.

Until next time,
K

"If you want a full pipeline of ideal prospects but have no time for marketing, do this: email marketing... this ongoing exposure to those who need to be reminded that you exist will keep you fresh in their minds and build a foundation of trust until their moment of needs comes around."
