State of the Mission

Tom Dorman
Executive Director

The past twelve months have given Action Ministries ample opportunity to live out its mission of “sharing the love of Jesus Christ by providing groceries, hope and encouragement to low-income families.” He has certainly sent us a lot of families needing our help. Through October, 2009, we had processed 7206 client visits as compared with 5727 at the same time last year. That’s a 25% increase in the number of times families have had to come to us for help. About 15% of the families we see are new to us. Many of them would rather be anyplace other than our offices, but the economy has touched their lives and they have children to feed. In addition, we are in our second year of providing bags of food to some of the children in the Kenton County School District who are at risk of hunger on the weekends. These children depend on their free lunches and breakfasts at school and may have very little to eat on the weekends. Through the Family Resource Centers at the schools, we have been able to provide for 86 children each week and will increase that to 96 in January. We are also helping other agencies by giving them our surplus items when we can. We are sharing with almost 70 other agencies, to some degree or another.

To this point, we have been able to maintain the level of service that our clients have come to expect from us. We can give them government commodities, meat, pizza, fresh produce, diary products, canned and packaged goods, paper products and some personal hygiene and cleaning products. For a family of three or four, it’s probably enough to last about a week with careful management. For larger families, we are able to give them a little more. We can do this because our contributors understand the need and continue to support the work. Going forward, we will rely on that support and the interest and support of folks who have not been part of “our team” in the past.

Hopefully, most of you know that we are an ALL VOLUNTEER organization. No one here, including me, gets a salary of any kind. That allows us to use all contributions to run the building (mortgage, insurance, utilities, truck) and buy food. Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Mission and there we particularly need your help! We need people who will train to be interviewers and receptionists in the front office and we need men who will drive the truck and work in the warehouse. Whatever time you are able to give, we can probably use. Front office people would need to be available from 9-noon, weekdays. You don’t need to commit to come everyday. It would be wonderful if we could have a list of trained people we could call to fill in or fill out our schedule at particularly heavy times (like January and February). Men in the warehouse are needed from 8-1:00 to drive the truck to pick up donated and purchased food and to keep the shelves stocked so bags of food can be made for the clients coming to us. If you have any interest in getting more involved by volunteering, please call me at 859-261-3649 or use my email address actmin3907@aol.com. I’d be very happy to talk with you and fit you into our schedule.

Another way you might be able to help would be by organizing a canned food drive at your office, church or school. It’s amazing how much is donated to us in these food drives and it goes a long way to stretching our food budget.

In closing, I want to thank all of you who have supported Action Ministries over the past fifteen years. I would encourage those of you who don’t know much about us to check us out and see if, perhaps, we're a good fit for your support. I would also ask for your prayers for this work.  What we are doing, we are doing in His Name and without His blessings, nothing will be accomplished.

Food for Thought

Our Food For Thought program which provides bags of kid-friendly food for children who have no reliable source of weekend food is off to a great start again this year! Because of donations from many individuals, churches, and grants from the following groups, we are able to provide for 96 children each week.
  • Sam’s Club Foundation
  • Calvary Christian School
  • R.C. Durr Foundation
  • The R.C. Hinsdale School- Kindergarten Classes
  • Robert M. Butler Memorial Foundation
  • St. Timothy Church, Union, Kentucky

The Family Resource Co-coordinators at the schools tell us each week how much they and their students appreciate this extra help.
