Chronic Polluters:

Colonial Pipeline Company in Greensboro stores fuel in storage tanks and discharges treated stormwater to an unnamed tributary to the East Fork Deep River. While the facility has been cited for very few violations in recent years, benzene and other petroleum-related compounds are among the substances released by the facility.

You can view the facility's pollution record to learn more (#NC0031046), and request a copy of their new draft permit by contacting Joe.Corporon@ncdenr.gov or 919-807-6304. Comments on this facility's permit are due September 30, and can be sent to Surface Water Protection Section, Point Source Branch, 1617 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1617.

Contentnea Metropolitan Sewerage District Wastewater Treatment Plant in the Neuse River Basin is applying to expand the flow coming out of the plant. The facility already contributes a number of contaminants to Contentnea Creek, which flows through a neighborhood of 42% minority residents. The plant has often violated limits in its permit for fecal coliform, total suspended solids, and biological oxygen demand as well as phosphorus and cyanide! These violations have added up to more than $21,000 of Clean Water Act fines in the last five years.

You can view the facility's pollution record to learn more (#NC0032077), and request a copy of their new draft permit by contacting James.McKay@ncdenr.gov or 919-807-6304. Comments on this facility's permit are due September 30, and can be sent to Surface Water Protection Section, Point Source Branch, 1617 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1617.

Dupont Fayetteville Works Fluorocarbons dumps tens of thousands of pounds of toxic chemicals into the Cape Fear River each year. In 2005, residents and groups organized to draw attention to the chemical C8, which Dupont manufactured at the time and which was finding its way into surface and groundwater near the plant, as well as the employees. More recently, the facility has received about $3000 in fines and still releases more than 55,000 pounds of toxic substances like Toluene and Dichloromethane to the river.Dupont Fayetteville

You can view the facility's pollution record to learn more (#NC0003573), and request a copy of their new draft permit by contacting Sergei.Chernikov@ncdenr.gov or 919-807-6304. Comments on this facility's permit are due September 30, and can be sent to Surface Water Protection Section, Point Source Branch, 1617 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1617.

Corpening Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant in McDowell County has been out of compliance with their discharge permit for 11 of the last 12 quarters. Corpening Creek (also called Youngs Fork) is a 303(d) listed impaired waterway in the state of NC, and this wastewater treatment plant has a long history of noncompliance and issues with specific parameters, including cyanide. The plant operated under a Special Order by Consent for a period starting in 2007 while they worked on some facility improvements, which they did complete (behind schedule). However, violations of a number of limits in the last two years indicate that the facility still isn't up to speed and is a chronic contributing factor to the impaired status of Corpening Creek in the Catawba River Basin.

You can view the facility's pollution record to learn more (#NC0031879), and request a copy of their new draft permit by contacting Bob.guerra@ncdenr.gov or 919-807-6304. Comments on this facility's permit are due September 16, and can be sent to Surface Water Protection Section, Point Source Branch, 1617 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1617.
