There are so many wonderful ideas out there for DIY dessert tables, but few instructions about the quantity of desserts/candy to actually buy! Please help a broke-student bride figure out a close ballpark on how much to buy without overspending and under-delivering to her sweet guests. I’ll be having about 250 guests, and since I don’t have a wedding cake I’d like people to bring some home with them as their favors.

Dear Sugar,
Ah, Candy Buffets. They’re like cake that just keeps on giving. I could be here all day expressing my love, but you’ve got a wedding to plan. So, first you need to decide what type of candies you want to serve, and how. You’ve got a lot of guests, so shoot for say, 8 different types of candies. Do you want to bring in a certain color scheme, too, to match your wedding colors? Once you’ve picked your candies and your colors, you can look for containers. Floral supply stores, Ikea, thrift stores, flea markets, or even Amazon.com. (type in “candy buffet” and marvel at the results). Just make sure that you can clean them easily! I’m a bigger fan of not having lids on them, or at least not on all of them – easier access, less juggling. Do NOT forget scoops for the non-wrapped candy. And if you’re having 250 guests, try and get at least 500 bags. At least.
