2012 has arrived... Now What?
Dear friends of the garden,
May you refresh and re-set yourself on these long winter nights,
curiously feeling into those seeds of the new
your heart would like to grow in 2012.
What's calling you ? What's simmering in the darkness?
What needs your attention and care?
Banyen is bubbling with great events this month (these and more upcoming goodies are detailed further below in Events -- see you there--):
* Jan. 9 (event sold out!): Dr. Gabor Maté, author of In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts with guest speakers from "Beyond Addiction" will explore Who We Are When We are Not Addicted. (at the Unitarian Church)
* Jan. 10: Georgia Straight's astrologer Rose Marcus, author of Insights into Evolutionary Astrology, will discuss Collective Awakening: The Momentous Planetary Alignments of 2012. (at Unity Church)

If you're weary of narrow and negative news, here's a fine source of positive news worldwide, from Ode: the Magazine for Intelligent Optimists. You can subscribe for free! Check it out here:
And, as our way (all 28 of us working here at Banyen) of both thanking you and wishing you a Joyful New Year, here are
"10 Laws on the Art of Joyful Living"
by Zen teacher and brush artist Kaz Tanahashi
1. Your happiness is more important than anything else.
2. The happier you are, the more you can help others.
3. Smiling makes you happy.
4. The more relaxed you are, the happier you are.
5. A moment of meditation can help you refresh yourself.
6. The lower your expectations are, the happier you are.
7. Happiness attracts happiness.
8. The ultimate healing is to live joyfully at each moment.
9. The more fully you face your own death, the more joyous you become.
10. You can always improve your art of joyful living.
And enjoy this Great Bell Chant (the End of Suffering), a short video with beautiful visuals and the voice of Thich Nhat Hanh -- a shared prayer for the wellbeing of all beings as this new year dawns.
Blessings as the Sun again moves northward toward spring,
and the Light "gets to you,"

Seeds to Plant
When you plant a tree…remember you are planting an entire ecosystem.
– Harry Roberts
from Gardening at the Dragon's Gate by Wendy Johnson
•••••••••••••••••••••
The ever-expanding scope and scale of the global economy obscures the consequences of our actions: in effect, our arms have been so lengthened that we no longer see what our hands are doing.
— Helena Norberg-Hodge, author of Ancient Futures
•••••••••••••••••••••
It is possible that the next Buddha will not take the form of an individual. The next Buddha may take the form of a community―a community practicing understanding and loving kindness, a community practicing mindful living. This may be the most important thing we can do for the survival of the earth.
― Thich Nhat Hanh
•••••••••••••••••••••
Water has great generosity and humility. It insists on no particular shape. It takes on the shape of whatever contains it: jug, stream, well, river, lake, ocean, tears, rain, mist or moisture. In this sense water holds a wonderful imaginative invitation in it.
― John O’Donohue, from Four Elements: Reflections on Nature
•••••••••••••••••••••
Joy is far less fragile than happiness. Joy seems to come from an unconditional wish to live, the willingness to accept life whole and show up to make the most of whatever is there. It is a kind of invincibility that attachment to any particular outcome would deny us.
― Rachel Naomi Remen, from The Little Book of Kitchen Table Wisdom

A Practice to Try
Doubt takes many forms. One is fear that you'll hurt yourself by going forward. Another form of doubt is feeling that you've misunderstood your life and that you're constantly making a fundamental mistake. Being without doubt has nothing to do with accepting the validity of a philosophy or concept. Absence of doubt comes from trusting in the heart, trusting yourself. Being without doubt means that you connect with yourself, that you experience mind and body being synchronized together. When mind and body are synchronized, then you have no doubt.
― Chögyam Trungpa, from Shambhala: Sacred Path of the Warrior

THE HEALING TIME
Finally on my way to yes
I bump into
all the places
where I said no
to my life
all the untended wounds
the red and purple scars
those hieroglyphs of pain
carved into my skin, my bones,
those coded messages
that send me down
the wrong street
again and again
where I find them
the old wounds
the old misdirections
and I lift them
one by one
close to my heart
and I say holy
holy.
― Pesha Gertler

THE SIMPLE LIFE,
NO CALL-WAITING
No cell phone, no caller id,
no cable, no Tivo, no Ipod,
no blueberry, no notepad,
no laptop, no riding mower,
no leaf blower, no weed eater,
no digital clock,
no air conditioner,
no new car;
I live in another country,
a different century.
I ride my 3-speed bike
to work, because
it helps the Earth
and eases the body
more gracefully
into its dying;
it makes the body work hard
and it likes work,
likes to do sweat-labor despite the avalanche
of labor-saving technology
whose function
is to drain us
of our life force.
I write by hand
in a notebook
because
I like to see where I've been, follow my tracks
back through the snow
to where I started,
see how things
work out on the page,
where I went wrong,
how to begin again,
nothing deleted.
I don't want to know
who's calling or
who has called.
I've lived 65 years
and I have never
gotten a phone call
that made a difference.
If you reach me, that's fine,
but if you don't
nothing is lost.
After all these years of heartbreak and disappointment,
of treachery and betrayal,
are you so far gone
that you believe
the next
phone call
will be the one
that saves you?
When Death comes for you,
you can't say,
Would you mind holding?
I've got a life on the other line.
― Red Hawk

IN A DARK TIME
In a dark time,
the eye begins to see,
I meet my shadow
in the deepening shade;
I hear my echo
in the echoing wood--
A lord of nature weeping
to a tree,
I live between the heron
and the wren,
Beasts of the hill
and serpents of the den.
What's madness
but nobility of soul
At odds with circumstance?
The day's on fire!
I know the purity
of pure despair,
My shadow pinned
against a sweating wall,
That place among the rocks--
is it a cave,
Or winding path?
The edge is what I have.
A steady storm of
correspondences!
A night flowing with birds,
a ragged moon,
And in broad day
the midnight come again!
A man goes far to find out
what he is--
Death of the self
in a long, tearless night,
All natural shapes
blazing unnatural light.
Dark, dark my light,
and darker my desire.
My soul, like some heat-maddened summer fly,
Keeps buzzing at the sill.
Which I is I?
A fallen man,
I climb out of my fear.
The mind enters itself,
and God the mind,
And one is One,
free in the tearing wind.
― Theodore Roethke
