Seniors In what promised to be a big round 10 clash between 4th & 6th spot on the ladder, we took on Mazenod at GBO. The home side came out of the blocks and kicked 4 goals to the Nodders 2 solitary points. The Wellers defence was standing up to all challenges and had only conceded one goal up until the long break. This was a mighty effort from the boys, considering Ben Hart was unavailable, Damo McGuigan was injured and Benny Craven was back on deck after a 5 week break. The message in the home rooms was - watch out, they will come back hard. And so it was, with 5 goals straight being the score to the Wellers 2 goals. With a 5 point lead at the final change, all present knew they were in for an extremely entertaining final quarter. Camberwell took 4 contested marks inside 45, but could only find the big sticks twice, although the last one turned out to be a match winner with Wellers back pocket, Greg Tolson taking a mark in the forward line, then being slammed to the ground by his opponent. The resultant 25 metre penalty ensured that the goal was kicked with 6 seconds to spare. Again the Wellers in a close one! Not great for the already receding hair line!!
Reserves In a pleasing reversal of form the Reserves produced a quality game of football against the second top side, unfortunately in a bitter sweet result we lost the game by 2 points. The expected wet weather did not arrive during the game so a free flowing match was the order of the day. Our ability to win the ball at the stoppages early in the first quarter enabled us to take a 3 goal lead before Mazenod responded and posted some easy late goals. With the introduction of Tristan Berenger at Centre Half Forward our forward line was much more open and cohesive. At half time with a small margin between the two sides the stage was set for a real contest to beat one of the top sides. The third quarter started poorly and we let Mazenod take a three goal lead within 10 minutes of the quarter. The really pleasing feature was our ability to respond to this challenge and we pegged back the Mazenod lead and at three quarter time we only trailed by 3 points. The final quarter was a terrific struggle between two sides committed to win the game. Nick Searles again worked tirelessly in the ruck and Matt Cottrell maintained his high quality performance. Our defence was again solid and well lead by Alex McKenzie and our midfield of Hudson, Robinson, Woodbridge and Decarne ran hard all day.

Under 19 An important match to make it 3 in a row, we faced the lowly placed but determined Marcellin outfit. We knew that Marcellin would would be strong with the services of some talented year 12 students during School holidays. Pre game a challenge was thrown to the team to apply great pressure at every opportunity. This instruction was followed out fanatically by the team. Our work winning the football and dispossessing the opposition by tackle pressure was as good as it has been so far this year. Unfortunately we could not capitalise only managing two goals from ten shots. The Second quarter was played in much the same fashion, going into the long break in front by 26 points. That margin could have been double that had we not continued to blow some golden opportunities in front of goal. After a praise filled half time address, we came out after half time slow, lethargic and uncommitted. In the first 10 mins of the quarter our opposition outplayed us luckily for us only scoring 2 points. After this we quickly clicked back into gear kicking 3 quick goals back to 46 points at 3 quarter time. The Final quarter was an even affair. Both sides scoring the most freely they had all game. The Final margin a convincing 45 points. We now look forward to continuing this good form into next weeks match against Old Melbournians.
Under 18 We played the other top side from U18 North – Werribee – at home and were handed a football lesson by a very committed, well-trained, disciplined and confident team. Wth two more players unavailable for several weeks due to overseas trips, we went into the game with only 19 players and, once again, faced an opponent with several interchange players allowing them multiple rotations. Werribee came out strongly while our boys were fumbling under pressure and second to the ball. By ¾ time, we were 60 points down carrying two injured players and staring at a massive defeat. The U18s dug deep, refused to give in and outscored Werribee in the final quarter with 9 shots for 5 goals against 6 shots for 4 goals to salvage something out of the game and to realise that they can mix it with this opponent. It has been a frustrating few weeks for our young team, losing more players through long-term injury or an extended absence overseas than we are adding to our group. We remain without our Captain and Vice-Captain for several weeks through injuries and we now have 5 of our players unavailable for several weeks due to overseas trips. This is the time when we have to dig deep, work really hard and meet some big challenges head on.
