Coming Soon: Cambodia-Thailand Border Dispute Simulation
A long-standing conflict over the land surrounding a Buddhist temple serves as the centerpiece of ICONS’ newest single-class simulation “Cambodia-Thailand Border Dispute”. This new simulation will put students in the roles of Thai and Cambodian government and military leaders, as well as religious leaders, ASEAN officials, and representatives from UNESCO. Together, they must attempt to address security and economic concerns fueling the dispute over Preah Vihear, a site of religious and cultural significance located along the Thailand-Cambodia border.
Due to be released in October 2011, “Cambodia-Thailand Border Dispute” is a perfect simulation for courses focused on geopolitics, negotiation, or international conflict. Look for an announcement in a few weeks with more information about this exciting new simulation!

Instructional Resource: Teaching About Border Disputes
What does Google have to do with international border disputes? This CNN article, sure to spark discussion among your students, describes how Google Maps recently found itself in the middle of a border dispute between Nicaragua and Costa Rica.
For information about additional border disputes, visit the International Boundaries Research Unit’s website. The IBRU, based at Durham University, offers a news database containing news stories on various disputes. The IBRU’s website also features numerous map resources, including maps outlining international river boundaries, maritime claims, and more. Their maps of the Arctic and South Atlantic provide a fascinating opportunity for students to explore the competing maritime claims within these regions.
