Welcome to the Spring issue of the JCC's Fitness and Lifestyles Newsletter!
Congratulations on getting the year off to a good start. We have seen a lot of new faces in the Fitness centre and our 'Stick with it!' Fitness Challengers are the most dedicated bunch we have seen.
 
This issue we introduce some funky new fitness training tools now available in the fitness centre. We welcome back a popular trainer and launch our new Weightloss program. Plus we give you a sneak peak of what is coming up for Spring and Summer 2011.

WHAT'S NEW  

BACK IN ACTIONNatalia, JCC Personal Trainer
A familiar face is back at the JCC. We are excited to have fitness expert Natalia Orekhova back on the Personal Training team and teaching some of her popular group fitness classes. Natalia is a an experienced personal trainer with expertise in:
  • Posture correction
  • Weightloss
  • Pre/postnatal
  • Self Defense

JUST PROMOTED
Shari Feuz B.A., the JCC's Personal Training Supervisor has taken on the additional role of Fitness Centre Manager.

Shari's diverse experiences in the fitness industry include 14 years as a personal trainer at venues including a women's only health club, a private business club as well as managing a high-end personal training studio.
Shari spent several years outfitting home and commercial gyms, publishing an international fitness and wellness magazine and managing a large scale health & fitness conference.
Shari is a freelance health and fitness writer and is featured in the latest issue of Alive Magazine.

Please welcome Shari as your new Personal Training & Fitness Centre Manager and your go-to-gal for all things fitness!

WHAT IS UGI?
The UGI ball has squish of a beanbag, the bounce-back of a stress ball and the beauty of simple design. -UGI Website

WHY WE LIKE IT

 

Very few tools make it into our Trainer’s toolbox. The versatility, durability and fun of the UGI ball is a welcome addition allowing hundreds of modifications to classic exercises and a tonne of new ones too.
Plus, UGI was created by a trio of Vancouver’s own fitness leaders and entrepreneurs who just happen to be your fellow JCC members.


HOW YOU CAN PLAY
Grab a UGI and play. There are 4 New UGI balls in the JCC Fitness Centre you can play with.  1 X 6 lbs, 2 X 8lbs, 1 X 10lbs. A large poster in the Fitness Centre demonstrates a sample of exercises to try.

NEW TRAINING TOOLS AT THE JCC: KETTLEBELLS

WHAT ARE KETTLEBELLS?
A kettlebell is a cast iron weight with a handle.

WHY WE LIKE THEM

 

The American Council on Exercise (ACE) recently demonstrated that Shorter duration workouts are required when training with Kettlebells. Study participants burned approximately 20 calories per minute during a typical kettle bell workout. That is aproximately 400 calories in a 20 minute workout which is an incredible amount of calories.  This suggests that the use of kettlebells provides a much higher-intensity workout than standard weightlifting. A 200 pound person would have to spend approximately 1 hour on a treadmill or 30 minutes of intense weight training to achieve the same caloric expenditure. In terms of calorie burning, these results are equivalent to running a six-minute mile pace, or cross-country skiing uphill at a fast pace.

The JCC FItness Centre has 4 new Kettlebells you can use in your training. 8kg, 12kg, 16 kg, 20kg.
