My sister Jen gave me a delightful book for Christmas called "Time to be -Reflections on facing the future".
It is full of snippets of wisdom, mostly from earlier centuries ....which fascinates me how much the problems we think are the result of modern times & our external world are more likely the result of our complex human condition & therefore our inner world!
Here are a few to ponder over!
" When the vision of Reality comes, the veil of ignorance is completely removed. As long as we perceive things falsely, our false perception distracts us and makes us miserable. When false perception is corrected, misery ends also."
Shankara" 9th century
To return to the root is to find the meaning. But to pursue appearances is to miss the source.

Welcome!
Welcome to the 4th edition of the Mallow Wellbeing Newsletter. Happy New Year to everyone and may 2012 be peaceful, connected & meaningful for you!
Another Mallow Wellbeing Group Program is commencing
February 13th 2012. See details in the left hand column.
Why not use the group program to help you stick to those New Year Resolutions you made?
New Year Resolutions are great at the time of making - we feel confident, motivated and positive about the outcome that we have envisaged for ourselves ....thinner, fitter, calmer, more organised, healthier etc etc.
Then after a few weeks ...ok for some its a few days... the enthusiasm wanes, life gets complicated and well you know how it goes ... Visitors drop in with a bottle of wine and you pull out the cheese and crackers ... then pizza seems like any easier option than the steamed chicken and salad.
Once we break our resolution even if it's just once we seem to get so guilty, beat ourselves up and then give up! I've been there too!
Changing our habits and denying ourselves what feels like ease and comfort are very hard things to do. We love our comfort zones ...even if we know they are making us fatter, or lazier or even sick.
The ABC Health & Wellbeing website recently reported the following:
"Research published in the European Journal of Social Psychology found that it can take 18 to 254 days for behaviours to become automatic when performed repetitively.
The good news is that missing the occasional day didn't affect the process, the researchers found."
Perhaps it's not coincidental that 254 days is 9 months... the gestation period for a baby to grow ...simple habits can be changed in about 3 weeks but if your habit is long standing and has always been a major source of comfort ...then 9 mths of 'nurturing' it may take!
Substituting the unhealthy habit with a healthy one that is equally nurturing or comforting can be a key to enabling change.
Research also shows that when we feel accountable to others we are more likely to break habits. So it helps to tell others of your intentions, and at the same time ask them for encouragement or support to get you through the difficult times.
The group Mallow Wellbeing program allows for the sharing of goals, the discussion of how barriers were overcome and a sence of shared purpose ....all helpful to make long lasting changes.
Focus on... The Art of Living Effortlessly
I am currently reading a book called "The Art of Effortless Living" by Ingrid Bacci Ph.D. The title itself sounded sufficiently intoxicating!
It's a fascinating read. It begins with the story of recovery by the author from a debilitating illness that modern medicine could neither diagnose nor treat.
But it's no 'poor me' story & no 'airy fairy' magic healing ....it's how this young socially and financially privileged university professor painfully but honestly examined her life, her responses to it and her inner world and began a long slow recovery using an integrative medical approach that included mind, body AND importantly spirit.
She studied the Alexander Technique and Feldenkrais and did deep emotional healing to unlock energy blocks in her muscles and tissues. She went onto teach others and become an holistic healer herself. She details in the book practical ways we can heal ourselves, along with good integrative medicine.
It's a story of learning, knowledge, and most importantly awakening of self awareness and reclaiming personal power & a sense of spiritual guidance and intuition.
.
Her regime of healing included:
-
Breath work
-
Body work that focuses on awareness of bodily tensions and gentle but strengthening release & movement - using the Alexander technique along with either Yoga/Tai Chi/Qi Gong
-
Emotional work - getting to really know our deeper emotions and releasing the associated grief & energy.
-
Spiritual work
-
Creative work
-
Relationship work
-
Authenticity work
The underlying message is one of not forcing life so much, loosening our grip (literally!) & trusting in that inner voice or source. Sometimes we need to go against the beliefs & attitudes of those around us to commit to this...not easy!
Taking ultimate responsibility for our health, our wellbeing and our sense of peace and happiness is a big ask but one that we don't really have much choice if we want to shift feelings of misery, pain, fatigue, frustration, bitterness or powerlessness.
The 'work' tag is not to be underestimated....rarely is there a quick fix despite much propaganda that promises cures, instant happiness, transformation etc!
This is where Mallow Wellbeing can assist you to shift & make long term change. Why not integrate this program into your pathway towards wellness? Enquire now to wellbeing@mallow.net.au
There are also many other well qualified and compassionate people who offer services or programs that can help in our healing pathways. In Stanthorpe we fortunately have a diverse range of evidenced based complimentary modalities such as :
