Happy Easter!!!

What A Wonderful Weekend! All the photos above were taken at the amazing Eggstravaganza we had this Saturday. If you'd like to see some more pictures from this event, please check out our facebook fan page!

Spruce-Up Saturday is Back!
(April 10th)

And this time we’ve got a better (soon to be adopted) spot!
If you want to help us clean up a part of White Rock Lake Park show up at the For The Love Of The Lake Office (below Another Broken Egg in the Casa Linda shopping strip] from 8 to 9 am this Saturday, April 10th. If you don’t recognize anyone, don’t worry and don’t be intimidated by the crowd, just walk up to the sign in desk by the office and ask for Carmen, she’s on the FTLOTL board and will be there to help you know everything you need to know.  They will give you gloves, trash & recycle bags & a cool long-stick-grabber-thing-a-ma-jig as well so no need to worry about bringing those from home. We may or may not have WRUMC t-shirts ready for you to wear while working, but they look like fun and they are on their way!
Our soon to be officially adopted section of White Rock Lake has a covered pavilion and great visibility, as well as no steep drop off into the lake so it’s much more child friendly than the place they had asked us to  pick up last month. (Oh, and you won’t need to walk across the footbridge to get their either, although that part was kinda fun☺)

Hope for Creation:
Join Us on April 21st at WRUMC!
By: Anna Clark

George’s Easter sermon was an eye-opener.  I always enjoy a fresh perspective and new insights into the Bible, particularly where they describe how God makes good come from bad.  As George explained, the book of John stands out from the other Gospels in its mention of a garden. As John 19:41 tells us, “At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid.” John 20:15 adds that Mary, upon seeing the resurrected Jesus, first thought he was a gardener. Under normal circumstances, I might dismiss the garden motif as an insignificant detail or even a literary device. However, I’ve recently learned that the Bible’s natural imagery is no accident.

Did you know that the Bible contains over one thousand references to Earth and caring for creation?  The message is clear: all of God’s creatures – nature, animals, and humanity - are inextricably linked to one another.  Yet, the natural resources that God intended to support his creation are being threatened by overconsumption, pollution, and waste. Species are disappearing at a rate of 1000 times the natural rate, leading to what many scientists recognize as a mass extinction. These dangerous trends, which stem from our industrial and individual activities, do not simply hurt the plants and polar bears. They are also harming humans at alarming rates.

Startling epidemics in cancers, infertility, asthma, and birth defects are caused in large part by pollutants found in virtually everything we ingest.  While we search feverishly for antidotes to cancer and other diseases in tropical rainforests, these centers of biodiversity are disappearing rapidly through deforestation due to our cycle of consumption.  Almost half the food in America is thrown away before it is eaten, while over 800 million people suffer from hunger.

Sustainable living can alleviate so many of these problems. Caring for God’s creation can be a profound expression of our faith, as well as a way to help our global brothers and sisters.  Having realized this myself, I’ve made it my mission to share this good news with others.

Although the current reality looks grim, George’s Easter sermon is a reminder that, “The second day is not the last day.”  There is life after death.  And there is still hope for creation, provided we take action to rectify the problems that we have inadvertently helped cause.   Simple actions such as recycling, conserving - and yes, planting a garden – represent tiny acts of faith that can help us cultivate a more sustainable community and a more close-knit congregation.

In honor of Earth Day’s 40th anniversary, White Rock UMC is participating in an international simulcast on Creation Care, a faith-based approach to environmental stewardship.  “Hope for Creation” is a live international simulcast by Blessed Earth with the intent to unite the church in a Biblical vision for care of the planet.  I hope you’ll join me in the sanctuary from 6:30 – 8:00 PM CST on Wednesday, April 21, for this exciting program.

Rebuilding?
There's An Ap for That.

Applications are awesome.

They give directions, recommend movies, organize your contacts, play videos, offer you silly games to play when you're stuck in a waiting room or in line at a grocery store.

But did you know that apps are way older than your phone? In fact some of those little wonders of the digital revolution are practically Biblical.

Whether you read the Bible in print, on line or with the Bible app on your phone Scripture is chock full of apps. Biblical applications are the blueprints God's given us as instructions for building our lives.

For the next several months Pastor George Fisk will lead our congregation in an in-depth study of this Master plan for rebuilding. We hope you'll join us.

Youth News

This Sunday, Dianne and Lindsay will be breaking in some new curriculum aimed at older youth in Sunday School. This should take us through the rest of the semester and be a perfect lead-in to our summer format.

Our topic at UMYF is “Family Ties: Sharing Responsibility in the Family,” led by Haley White and Karen Wood. Check out the latest Youth YouTube video to see what some of our members have to say on the topic. An afterglow will be held at Daniel’s house following youth worship. Remember to bring snack food or drinks to share with the group.

If you are Katarina Morgan, we thank you for representing White Rock at the CCYM Spring Meeting this weekend! For the rest of our leadership-minded youth, we are having another Youth Council meeting this Sunday at 2:00, to set the details for upcoming fund-raisers. Remember to bring your ideas, including who, what, where, when, and how, so that we can get things moving as soon as possible.

Registration opened up this week for Mission Trip (July 30-August 8), Mystery Trip (July 23-25), and the Camp Forrest Back to School Retreat (August 13-15). Registration is also still open for Senior High Camp (June 14-19), Junior High Camp (June 21-26), and JYMO (July 6-10). Registration for these, as well as downloadable summer calendars are available online at wrumc.org. Spaces are limited, so sign up ASAP!

You can also register for the much more fast approaching UMYF site night to Celebration Station for “Drunk Busters” on April 25. That’s right, we are taking you to drive go-carts, and the friendly staff will see to it that you’re all nicely intoxicated before you get behind the wheel of the car. Well, they’ll simulate it for you anyway, though I’m not sure exactly how. All I know is it’s perfectly safe, and there will be pizza and game tokens involved as well. This is a unique way for us to approach the topic of alcohol abuse. The cost is $15 per youth. Online registration is open now.
