Yes, there really is a SAKE DAY!  No, Malcolm did not make it up as an excuse to drink more sake.  Sake Day in Japan is known as "Nihonshu no Hi".  

Sake Day is always celebrated on October 1st.  This year we are lucky that it falls on a Saturday making it easier to celebrate.

It is our understanding that the reason Sake Day falls on October 1st is because originally the "Brewers Year" began on October 1st. Nowadays the Brewers Year begins instead on July 1st.

The first Sake Day was declared by the Brewer's Association way back on October 1, 1978.

How do you celebrate Sake Day?

So how do you celebrate Sake Day correctly?  We researched this and found that in Japan, most people do the following ritual on Sake Day to celebrate it.

1. First, draw a circle on the floor.
2. Then take two quick sips of your sake.
3. Next, put your right foot in the circle.
3. Then take your right foot out of the circle.
4. Next put your right foot again in the circle.
5. Then shake your right foot all about.

Okay, Okay, we were joking. Obviously that's the Hoki Poki and you don't need to that in order to celebrate Sake Day.  (Although some of you may have done the Hoki Poki after consuming a few too many bottles of sake.) 

Instead we would recommend that you celebrate Sake Day by simply enjoying some good sake that day.  

Whether with friends or by yourself, pick up a bottle of your favorite sake (from The Sake Shop of course) or go to your favorite Izakaya and drink some sake on Sake Day!
