The Crucible
Ah, March...the time when we celebrate good ol’ St. Patty and wear green and shamrocks in his honor. St. Patrick used shamrocks to explain the Holy Trinity to his followers back in the day. You know the Holy Trinity...arts, industry and community. Okay, so maybe that’s our Holy Trinity.

In any case, grab yer lucky creative charms and come on over to The Crucible. We’ve got a new spring quarter startin’ and great deals on winter classes...and that’s no bit of blarney.

And the winner is **Drum Roll Please**
Cynthia S.

Don’t fret if ye name was not pulled from the pot this month, yous still in the runnin’ for future drawings.

So what’s ye creative resolution for 2011? Do be sharing it with us at resolvetocreate@thecrucible.org.

Faculty Focus
Rick Turner

It’s time to toot the horn of one of our amazing faculty members, Rick Turner.  Rick teaches one of our most popular classes, How to Build a Mandolin or Ukulele in Just Four Days. Rick Turner co-founded Alembic in 1970 and was involved in the design and construction of Alembic instruments. He founded Rick Turner Guitars in 1979 and joined Gibson in 1988 where he served as president of Gibson Labs West Coast R&D Division. He currently runs his own company called Renaissance Guitars. For the big guitar buffs, Rick is responsible for some significant innovations like:

• Inventing and patenting the graphite neck in 1976, with Geoff Gould who then started Modulus Graphite.
• The use of curved plates on the front and back of his Model 1 electric guitars in order to reduce standing wave hysteresis loss.
• The use of 18v preamps in an attempt to tame the 'quack' sound commonly associated with piezoelectric acoustic guitar pickups.

You can currently checkout some of Rick’s handwork on the cover of Acoustic Guitar Magazine’s April issue as well as later this year at the Museum of Art and Design in New York for their show Crafting Modernism: Mid-Century American Art & Design starting October 11, 2011.
